Jury Finds Illegal Retaliation for Reporting Gender Discrimination and Failure to Prevent Retaliation at the Santa Clara County Fire Department
SAN JOSE, CA- On Friday, December 7,2007 a jury found illegal retaliation at the Santa Clara County Fire Department. "This verdict sends a powerful message that employees must be free to stand up for themselves without fear of retaliation," said Joshua D. Boxer, Esq. from the Law Offices of Mayor Joseph L. Alioto and Angela Alioto, in San Francisco, California.
After complaining of gender discrimination, Plaintiff Captain Monique Vandenberg, the first women Captain in the history of this department, was subjected to further writeups, a barrage of threats, intimidation and false accusations of wrongdoing. The jury found the department liable for two discrimination causes of action: Retaliation and the Failure to Prevent Retaliation. The jury awarded Captain Vandenberg over $200,000 in damages.
